Bradford factor report

Bradford factor report

The Bradford factor is a widely-recognised Human Resources mechanism for measuring Employee absence. At its most basic, the theory is based around the premise that multiple short absences are more disruptive than one long absence. The Bradford factor report allows a Supervisor to 'score' each Employee according to the disruptiveness of their absences. For example, an Employee who has taken one day off for seven weeks in a row will score higher than a second Employee who has taken 20 consecutive days off due to a serious illness.

The Bradford factor score is determined using the following formula:   B = S² * D

  • B = the Bradford factor score
  • S = spells (or number of times) the Employee has been absent

  • D = duration (or the total number of days the Employee has been absent)

For example, if an Employee has 5 spells of absence, each for 2 days, the formula would be as follows:

5* 5* 10 = 250

To run the Bradford factor report, navigate to the Reports feature and select Bradford from the list. See Reports for further details. This will take you to the following page:

  • Name - the Employee's name

  • Incidents - the number of times the Employee has had spells of absence

  • Duration (days) - the total number of days the Employee has been absent for, when all instances have been added together
